Twilight Vision is a series of cyanotype prints that, like my recent paintings, are abstract landscapes found in aging weathered walls. Using one of the earliest photography techniques, I create these prints directly from the photos of walls that I have been collecting from around the world. Put simply, a cyanotype print is made by brushing light sensitive chemicals onto watercolour paper, exposing it to sunlight through a full size negative to make a contact print, and then developing it in water. The result is a monochromatic photograph with beautiful tones of Prussian blue.
There is something about working with fine paper, holding a brush to apply the chemicals, then working in sunshine and with water to create such richly coloured images that really engages me. For my art, the process of creating is as important as the final image, and with these works the rich tradition of this photographic technique is as important as the direct hand in creating the photos. And, of course, like recent paintings, the double vision of distressed walls and distant horizons is a subject I can’t resist.
