Horizon Muse is a series of small paintings that I have been working on recently. Following the larger paintings of the Seeing Through Walls series that was on exhibition last year, I began to work with acrylic paint on small canvases. With photos of old walls as reference and the view out of my window to a snow covered lake, I painted this series over a few months this winter. Starting with the composition and texture of a weathered wall, moved by the daily changing winter sky, and sparked by the blended memory of standing at water’s edge these paintings take their shape. And as much as my mind and perception create these paintings, they also rely on the accidental mark and texture of paint under the palate knife on canvas…much like the accidental stain or crack in a wall worn by years of weather. The horizon is always my muse with these paintings…that line where sky meets earth or sea, a place of calm in the distance brought close in a momentary vision.
